MISSION STATEMENT

The mission of the Committee for Broadening Participation of Underrepresented Groups is to develop, implement and oversee new and existing activities aimed at broadening the participation of women and underrepresented minorities in the activities of DED.
Welcome to BPart!
Over the past 10 years, the Broadening Participation committee has met during the annual professional development workshop at the ASME IDETC, targeted at individuals in our community who are members of underrepresented groups in engineering, such as women, people of color, members of the LGBTQIA+ community, people with disabilities, to name a few. Our committee seeks to develop, implement and oversee new and existing activities aimed at broadening the participation of women and underrepresented minorities in the activities of the Design Engineering Division of (DED) the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME).

This year, we are creating a space for IDETC attendees to convene, network, and learn about issues related to broadening participation in engineering through a series of virtual events and platforms intended to engage members of underrepresented groups in engineering and their allies in dialogue. To learn more about the events we have planned for IDETC 2020 and how to get involved, check out the “How to Participate” and the “Code of Conduct” pages that we’re using for these events. To learn more about our committee and the data we have used to generate our insights, check out our accepted 2020 Design Engineering Conference paper here [link coming once the paper becomes digitally available].
