Technical Committees
Design Automation (DAC)
The ASME Design Automation Committee promotes research and disseminates knowledge in four key areas related to Design Automation: (1) Design Representation, (2) Design Optimization, (3) Design Evaluation, and (4) Design Integration.
Design Education (DEC)
The primary mission of the Design Education Committee of the Design Engineering Division of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers is the improvement of education in the art and the science of engineering design for students, researchers and educators, and professional practitioners. The range of issues is not limited to design methods and processes, but also includes safety, reliability, liability and ethics, globalization, as well as other professional concerns.
Design for Manufacturing and the Life Cycle (DFML)
The mission of the DFMLC committee is to disseminate practices, theories, and computational methods dealing with all areas of design and manufacturing integration amongst the engineering community as well as to encourage the growth and recognition of the value of design and manufacturing integration.
Design Theory and Methodology (DTM)
The mission of the Design Theory and Methodology Committee is to facilitate and enhance the development of design theories and the methods that grow from them. The Design Theory and Methodology (DTM) conference promotes research, dissemination of knowledge, and debate in topics including scientific theories of design, creativity and innovation in design, formal design methods, product modeling, design pedagogy, and design management.
Mechanisms and Robotics (MR)
The Mechanisms and Robotics Committee has the mission of promoting advances in research and education in the theory, design and applications of mechanisms, machines, robots and mechatronics systems. Areas of interest include: kinematics and dynamics of mechanisms, analysis of robotic systems, design of cams, gears, transmissions, and linkages, bio-inspired machines, mechatronics, compliant mechanisms, and micro and nano machines.
Micro and Nano Systems (MNS)
The mission of the Micro- and Nanosystems (MNS) Committee is to promote research and development activities related to advancement of microsystems and nanotechnology within the broad scope of the design engineering field.
Mechatronic and Embedded Systems and Applications (MESA)
The mission of the Technical Committee (TC) on Mechatronic and Embedded Systems and Applications (MESA) is to provide a forum for technical discussions and interactions on topics related to emerging technologies in mechatronic and embedded systems that impact critical research and engineering issues.
Multibody Systems and Nonlinear Dynamics (MSND)
The mission of the Technical Committee on Multibody Systems and Nonlinear Dynamics (MSND) is to promote research, application, and education in experimental, symbolic, computational, and analytical activities pertaining to multibody systems, nonlinear dynamics, control, and related technical areas.
Power Transmission and Gearing (PTG)
The objective of the Power Transmission and Gearing (PTG) Committee is to promote activities and education supporting the art and science of power transmission and gearing. We promote the dissemination of knowledge and information pertinent to power transmission and gearing through sponsorship of technical papers, technical meetings, seminars, and conferences.
Vehicle Design (VDC)
The Vehicle Design Committee (VDC) promotes innovative analytical, computational, and experimental investigations in control, dynamics, and design of full vehicle (including conventional IC engine powered platform as well as hybrid EV platform) systems and their subassemblies. With the ever-rising demands on passenger safety, human-vehicle interface and human behavior modeling/simulation are also embedded into the technical spectrum of VDC.
Reliability, Stress Analysis & Failure Prevention (RSAFP)
This year’s RSAFP Conference includes topics covering considerations in design process; computer-based (numerical/FEA, etc.) analyses for RSAFP; material considerations for RSAFP (with possible sessions on nanocomposites, polymer-based designs, composites, polymer processing, and functional materials); safety and reliability in design, RSAFP issues in adhesive joints, bolted connections and threaded joints, stress analyses; failure analyses and modeling; and RSAFP issues in microelectromechanical and nano electromechanical systems.
Vibration and Sound (TCVS)
The Technical Committee on Vibration and Sound (TCVS) provides leadership for promoting research and disseminating knowledge in all areas related to mechanical vibration, acoustics, dynamics and controls.
Fastening and Joining (FJ)
The Fastening and Joining (F&J) Technical Committee serves ASME members and others who are interested in novel developments related to fastening, welding and adhesive joining of polymeric, metallic, ceramic and other advanced materials and structures. Particular areas of interest include design and manufacturing, cost-effective and rapid joining methods, nano technology and innovations in adhesive bonding, dynamic behavior and long term durability of joined structures, nondestructive evaluation and characterization, industrial applications and case studies as well as many others.

Standing Committees
Constitution & Bylaws Committee
The Constitution & Bylaws Committee is charged with keeping current and interpreting the Constitution, Bylaws and Operating Procedures of the Executive Committee of the Division and with keeping them in accordance with the Constitution, Bylaws and Rules of the Society.
Honors & Awards Committee
One of the most active missions of the DED is to recognize the outstanding research, education, and engineering accomplishments of members of the design engineering community through its vibrant awards program. This is managed by the Honors and Awards Standing Committee. There are currently up to twenty-eight awards given out within DED during any two year period, including four Society-level awards, two Division-level awards, six Division/Committee-level awards, and sixteen Committee-level awards.
Publicity & Newsletter Committee
The primary objective of this committee is to produce the annual DED newsletter. This newsletter is designed to include primary information from every committee and journal within the DED, in addition to articles from key members of the executive committee and the IDETC conference. This newsletter is then passed on to all members of the DED.
Special Committee on K-12 Awareness of Design Engineering
A key objective of the committee is to promote the awareness of K-12 STEM education and outreach to the design community.
Broadening Participation of Underrepresented Groups Committee
The mission of the Committee for Broadening Participation of Underrepresented Groups is to develop, implement and oversee new and existing activities aimed at broadening the participation of women and underrepresented minorities in the activities of DED.
Student Affairs & Early Career Committee
The Student Affairs & Early Career Committee is committed to integrating students into the ASME DED community. In particular, they would like the students to become aware of the breadth of research activities in the DED and familiar with the people conducting them.
Journal Relations Committee
The objective of the DED Journal Relations Committee (JRC) is to facilitate increased impact of the journals affiliated with the Design Engineering Division. The committee will share best practices, decide appropriate metrics, and determine and implement strategies that will influence the journals’ impact.
Nominating Committee
DED Honors and Awards Nominations Committee is responsible for identifying deserving candidates from the DED community for all ASME and DED honors and awards at the division and society level and ensuring that a good slate of nominations is available for the selection committees. The nominations committee will include representation from each technical committee and will be distinct from the selection committees for each award.
Innovation and Entrepreneurship Committee
The mission is to promote innovation and entrepreneurship in academia and industry and elsewhere.
Additional Special Committees
Special Committee on Professional Engineering Licensure
US Council for Theory of Machines & Mechanisms
